Coffee-Shop Owners Find Success by Going Back to Square One

Square 1 Coffee has been proudly (and enthusiastically) serving craft coffee in southwest Edmonton since 2016. Known for its cozy atmosphere and fine selection of small farmer, direct-trade coffee varieties, this family-owned and operated company has been supported by its local community from day one. But it hopes to be more than just the little coffee shop next door. Currently in the process of opening their second store, the company wants to share its craft coffee passion with others and help educate those who’re interested in learning more about the story behind each cup and the process behind each bean.

Our Story

Sometimes, to move forward in your life or career, you have to go back and start over. This was the case for Brandy and Jonathon Brozny, the husband-and-wife team behind Square 1 Coffee. Brandy had stayed at home for the last 19 years to help raise the couple’s six children. Now that they were older, she was ready to work again, but like other women in similar positions, she felt she was starting her career from scratch. At the same time, her husband Jonathon was thinking about leaving his long-time position in the financial sector. He hated the paperwork but enjoyed working with people.

In 2015, they talked it over and decided to open a coffee shop. Both of them have always loved coffee and the community “feel” of coffee shops. They shared the same dream of opening up a local cafe and the high uniqueness of each cup offered by farm-to-cup craft coffee excited them. Despite not having had a background in the coffee industry, they both were in a position in their lives where they were ready to take the leap. After months of research, they found a great roaster in Vancouver and an ideal location in their own community to start their venture.

Coffee School for new staffLike other true craft coffees on the market, the roasters Square 1 Coffee works closely with can trace their beans to a specific farm or crop. They have spent extra time developing strong relationships with numerous smaller farmers and roasters. What else sets Square 1 Coffee apart from other coffee shops? Most customers would say the “cozy atmosphere”, the important relationships with the farmers, and of course their latte art is pretty impressive. Plus their willingness to share their passion, knowledge, and education with others who are interested in learning more about craft coffee. Their story and love for coffee clearly has no bounds.

So far, the company’s growth and success has been steady. They’ve had incredible support from their community and roasters. These same roasters have provided them with invaluable education and helped them create an ideal craft coffee experience from square one (as reflected by their name) —people can come to their shop to have a fresh cup of coffee and a fresh start, or be inspired to start something new. As the business expands, the couple will continue to focus on providing the same warm, inviting space and quality craft coffees that their customers have come to love.

The Next Big Step

New Location RenderingSquare 1 Coffee will be opening a second location in May at the Edmonton International Airport’s Premium Collection Outlet (EIA POC) in the local section. This new location will have more advanced equipment, more streamlined systems and a better layout. The company is hoping to raise $60,000 through the loan with ATB LendR. This loan would help Square 1 Coffee:

-pay for the equipment in the new location

-expand its shops to include an educational centre

-promote the new location (by increasing its marketing budget)

Jonathon Brozny

The idea of opening a coffee shop had been brewing in Brandy and Jonathon’s minds for some time. It was only when they were both experiencing big transitions in their lives that they were able to fully explore this exciting opportunity. For the last 19 years, Brandy had been a stay-at-home mom. Now that their six kids were older, she was ready to work again but she would have to start her career from scratch. Meanwhile, Jonathon was getting tired of working in the financial industry. He hated the paperwork, but loved working with people. By taking a moment and going back to “square one,” they discovered their original passion for coffee and coffee shops, created Square 1 Coffee and have been moving forward successfully ever since.
