Our Story

In 2011, Alissa Lees was was on her way from the gym, walking to work in downtown Calgary. She had recently been diagnosed as a celiac and needed to find something that was gluten-free and that she could quickly grab on her way. To her surprise and frustration, she was unable to find much across the six different cafes she tried. Having been an avid home baker all her life and having spent most of her professional career in the food & beverage industry, she started to see the huge potential in the marketplace for fresh, gluten-free baking, that people actually want to eat. She began the long process of crafting, testing and refining recipes, discovering that even her pastry chef friends were only able to give her vague advice, because baking gluten-free was still a relatively new concept.

After the careful crafting of delicious recipes for quite some time, the business in its current form made it’s debut in the fall of 2016. Initially selling through local markets, the business started to gain traction with orders from hotels, stores and local cafes. Seeing the potential of these larger clients Nourish has continued to supply this growing group of customers, while developing some additional unique sales methods, such a successful online delivery model and popup shops in partner businesses. Now their customers can order their products to wherever is easiest for them to pick up, knowing they are getting some of the freshest, most delicious gluten-free baking in the area.

Nourish Kitchen and Bakery is one of those rare companies where you don’t just feel good about the product that you bought, but also who you bought it from. They pride themselves in being an Earth friendly, socially-aware, triple bottom line company. They choose to purchase locally-sourced, fairly-traded, sustainable goods, and as much as possible, as they want to ensure you are receiving something you can feel good about physically and morally.

The Next Big Step

Nourish Kitchen and Bakery is going through some exciting growth including establishing a physical production and store location in Okotoks. As part of this growth, their $25,000 LendR loan will help them:

  • Build out the kitchen space of their new location to have greater functionality
