Big Fish is a cozy seafood and oyster house serving creatively prepared, sustainably-sourced fish and shellfish. Located just north of downtown on Edmonton Trail, they have been one of the top names in Calgary seafood for the past 15 years. Now with new owners, they have already made an impact in continuing this long tradition of high-quality dining.

 

Our Story

If a film director was looking to make a movie about a restaurateur, Saravanan Senniappan (the owner of Big Fish and Open Range) would make for an inspiring character. Beginning with a hotel management degree he worked for a number of years for Marriott Hotels in India. Moving to the UK, he became the First Cook on a number of cruise lines, before deciding to move to Canada. From there he managed a high-volume restaurant, successfully challenging his Red Seal before going further and becoming a Certified Chef de Cuisine, the highest form of certification available in the food industry.

After a number of years of saving he began to look for a restaurant to purchase. He wanted something that reflected his high food expectations and that he could make his own. In 2016 Big Fish and it’s partner restaurant Open Range came up for sale and he knew that these were the restaurants for him.

Big Fish is an institution among Calgary Seafood restaurants. It has often been rated as one of the top seafood restaurants in Calgary by the likes of Avenue Magazine and has received good reviews from local critic John Gilchrist. Saravanan has already added to this legacy. Using his expertise he has already been able to improve business operations, reduce food waste and increase the brand awareness of the restaurant.

 

The Next Big Step

Big Fish is looking to improve it’s patio area this spring requiring both interior and exterior renovations. They are looking to raise $100,000.00 through their loan with ATB LendR. Their LendR loan will help them:

  • Improve the overall look and comfort of their patio area

  • Modify their interior space to accommodate the exterior change

  • Help them promote their business and their new patio

  • Purchase new equipment to help with their increased traffic

Terms of LendR Loans

Loans will have a term of 2 years (24 months), beginning after the loan is successfully funded. 2009313 Alberta Ltd. will repay the principal plus 15% interest, calculated as a blended loan. 2009313 Alberta Ltd. will make monthly payments of 1/24 the total repayment amount. If 2009313 Alberta Ltd. chooses to repay the loan early, the principal plus the full interest remaining in the 24 month period must be paid.
